The Tour gives you an insight into the history of the area and an opportunity to see the interesting landscape.
The Grotta delle Trabacche is a small cave excavated into the limestone Hyblaean mountains. These caves, according to legend, were used by early Christians to escape from persecution. Today this idea has been changed and now they are known to have been the graveyard of the Christians ( the Grotta delle Trabacche, for its shape and its size, has been dated to the 4th century AD, then after the end of the persecution against Christians). This catacomb is on of the largest in the Ragusa Province. There are two canopy tombs which are very impressive. Recently, this site has gained notoriety because it was used in an episode of ”Il Commissario Montalbano”.
The seond part of our Tour takes us to the Catacomb of Cisternazzi which date from the fourth and fifth century AD. In it lies an archeological site consisting of a large room which is divided into two chambers by rocks, where tombs have been created. Along the wall to the left there is a burial chamber with a canopy.
The entrance to the site is free.
A visit to the proposed sites is not particularly difficult but you may come across dense vegetation so we recommend hiking boots or enclosed shoes, a small backpack anorak and water.
