The Second World War and its Places of Memory in Ragusa

Places of Memory is a journey to discover the local fortifications during WWII, set amongst carob trees, dry stone walls and stunning views.

This path will lead you to where the Italian forces were under attack by the Anglo American forces on the 9th and 10^th of July 1943.The Italians suffered many casualties but fought valiantly.

– Visit to the Guardia Finanza trenches and observation posts on the cliff where they came under fire from the Allied forces.

– Visit to the stronghold of Camemi where the 82 Airborne Division paratroopers were dropped to crush the Italian resistance to allow the 45 Infantry Division that landed on the nearby beaches of Scoglitti and Punta Braccetto to advance north. You can see the munitions dump, and the marks left by bullets on the walls. Through the observation slits you can admire the scenery and if on a clear day you may be able to see Malta.

– Visit n. 452 roadblock where many Italian soldiers lost their lives due to the overwhelming numbers and fire power of the Allied forces.

– Tasting of local product at a farm.
