Ragusa Ibla, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the most important examples of the Baroque period. Its historic centre is characterized by the presence of more than 50 Churches, narrow streets, palaces and monuments of rare beauty. The tour commences with a visit to Portal of St George, a beautiful portal in Chiaramonte Gothic style, surmounted by St. George in the act of slaying the Dragon. The Portal is the only evidence of the ancient Cathedral of Ragusa destroyed in the 1693 earthquake. Close by are the Giardini Iblei a lovely park where you can view the valley below from.
Going back to the main street you will reach Piazza Pola where stands the Church of St. Giuseppe, built on the ruins of an earlier Church. From here we will continue to Corso XXV Aprile, where we find Baroque and neoclassical buildings such as the Circolo di Conversazione and Palazzo Donnafugata. The Corso XXV Aprile leads to Piazza Duomo, location of the symbol monument of Ragusa, the Duomo di San Giorgio. This last, is one of the top expressions of Baroque Church architecture worldwide. It was built on the site of the Church of St. Nicholas which, until the 16th century, was of Greek Rite.
In Piazza Duomo you will find many bars and cafés where you can sample the many flavours of Sicilian ice cream.
This tour, along with the others which belong to the “Typical week for the tourist”, is always available. The aim is to enable visitors to choose a tour for every day of their stay.
